Beer excites me. When i was a kid i’d beg my Dad for ‘just a sip’ of his Heineken on NFL Sundays. My Mom did not like this. i remember thinking, probably around age 5, ‘this beer tastes like a skunk smells.’ i’ve since upgraded my tastes and appreciation for some of the finer beers southern California has to offer; the fruits of my research will be out this week in two different publications. That’s all i’m saying right now. Links to come. Burp.
In other beer related news, there is a ton of cool shit going down at Blind Lady Ale House (BLAH) in Normal Heights. First and foremost, San Diego beer nerds have been buzzing about BLAH brewer/owner Lee Chase’s first release, Automatic #1. An all-organic Belgian Wit style craft (some characteristics of a white ale or wheat beer), Automatic #1 has hints of fresh ginger, coriander and toasted American Oak. If you happen to be at BLAH when they tap out, head to Toronado because they just got a keg yesterday (5-12), so pound it while you can.
Although he might not admit it (sober), Mr. Chase is kind of a big deal in the craft beer community. He built quite the reputation for himself at the helm of Stone Brewing operations for years, but has since moved on to consult for several local establishments, and beyond. Oh, and there’s BLAH of course. You can find this fine man most nights pouring beers from his crafty tap selection, quite unlike any list in town, if i do say so myself.
As its name might imply, Automatic #1 is the first in a series of beers Mr. Chase aspires to produce in the future. Plans to expand BLAH to a 7 barrel brewpub are now officially underway, and if the city doesn’t drag ass we could be imbibing several BLAH brews in as soon as six months. Fingers crossed.
To celebrate American Craft Beer Week and Bike to Work Day, this Friday Blind Lady Ale House presents ‘Bike to BLAH Day.’ From 2pm-midnight (kitchen opens at 5pm), present YOUR bike helmet for a 15% discount. And i’ll bet you didn’t know that BLAH has a movie projector. Bike to BLAH Day is your chance to eat, drink and watch hours of classic bike culture flicks, like Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, The Bicycle Thief, Breaking Away, Quicksilver, American Flyers, Beijing Bicycle, The Flying Scotsman, 2 Seconds, The Cyclist, and more. Cool on wheels, for sure.
This Thursday May 14th Toronado is hosting Green Flash Brewing night starting at 5pm. On draft are Imperial IPA, 30th Street Pale Ale, West Coast IPA and LeFreak (linked to beer descriptions on GF’s website). There will be three casks (Imperial, 30th Street and WC Pale)… and a birdie told me there are several surprises in store. Can’t wait to see you there.
